VJBL 2017/18 Coaching Announcements

08.09.2017

Thank you to all of the people who applied for coaching positions with the Frankston Blues for season 2017/18.

With such a rich pool of talent to select from, our coordinators efficiently and professionally went about putting together a roster that we believe will bring us great success in the coming season.

There are some very welcome additions in Melbourne United Assistant Coach, Mike Kelly and former Baylor University player and McKinnon coach, Brooke Ary, who come to us with enormous experience whilst Michael Sherwell and Jordan Lipari are two of our younger coaches who have taken their opportunities with both hands and will lead our 12/1 and 18/1 boys teams respectively.

Stephen Fagan, Kerryn Mitchell, Julie Ofsofski and Scott Christiansen all return, albeit with new teams, and together, provide our Blues program with one of the most experienced line ups in recent memory. There are certainly exciting times ahead.

A big thank you to Scott, Kerryn and Chris Angus our new age group coordinators, for their time and effort in compiling this phenomenal list. You have ensured that we will have the right tools to bring further success to a club that is on the rise.

Go Blues!

“Thank you to all the applicants for the coaching positions within the boys program for VJBL season 2018/19. With many high credentialed coaches looking to take up roles it was a very difficult task fitting everyone in. We believe the depth of coaching combined with the talent of the blues players should produce some terrific results in the coming year.” - Scott Christiansen (Under 12s & 14s Boys Coordinator)

"We are very fortunate to have been able to put together a high calibre coaching lineup that is second to none. Being part of this lineup and being part of moving the Club in the right direction is really exciting. We are building a community of athlete-centred coaches down at Frankston that will no doubt attract the attention of the best talent from the Peninsula and surrounding suburbs. All of the Blues coaches are looking forward to working together and learning from each other so as to provide the best opportunities possible for the young Blues athletes. We not only aim to grow and develop their basketball ability, but all aspects of what it means to be a quality athlete and a quality person. It's great to be part of a club on the rise! Go Blues!” - Kerryn Mitchell (Under 12s & 14s Girls Coordinator)

“I am very excited about the coaching lineup we have across the U16-U18 age group. There are some high quality coaches on both the boys & girls side as we look to increase the high performance level of our older age groups & start to really develop our players to be the best players they can possibly be & I believe we have the right coaches in place to build on the already great results over the last few seasons. I'm looking forward to working with both the coaches & players over the coming season to make Frankston Blues the association of choice for rep players on the Peninsula.” - Chris Angus (Under 16s to 20s Boys and Girls Coordinator)

Boys Coaching Positions

Under 12.1 Boys - Michael Sherwell

Michael takes on the Under 12 first team after last year working as the assistant coach with the bottom age under 14 boys in 2017. Michael has much drive and experience developing elite level players after having played at VC level from under 12s through under 20s. He was a long time Frankston junior player who was Head Coach of the Frankston Under 16-1 boys team in 2012 & 2013, and also the Youth League Men’s Assistant coach in 2013.

Under 14.1 Boys - Scott Christiansen

Scott is the Blues Under 12 and 14 boys coaching co-ordinator and has an extensive history coaching at all levels over many years including Victorian State Championships, Youth League men and women, SEABL and Victorian State teams. In 2017 Scott coached this particular group as a bottom age group with the aim of preparing them for a successful VC season in 2018.

Under 16.1 Boys - Mike Kelly

Mike Kelly (Melbourne United; U.S./Australia) had a long playing career before transitioning into coaching.  Kelly’s playing career included time in the NBL playing for South East Melbourne Magic (1996-97), during which he won the NBL Championship, the Victoria Titans (1998-99), the Townsville Crocodiles (2000-04), and the Wollongong Hawks (2005).  Prior to coming to the NBL, Kelly played for Lucky Cement in Taiwan (1989), the Griffith Demons (NSW State League, 1990), the North East Melbourne Arrows (SEABL, 1991-93), and the Nunawading Spectres (SEABL, 1994-95).  His coaching background includes Assistant Coaching roles with the Wollongong Hawks (2006), Vanguard University (2007-08), Utah Valley University (2009-13), Townsville Crocodiles (2013-14) and currently with Melbourne United as Assistant Coach.

Under 18.1 boys - Jordan Lipari

Jordan brings a youthful exuberance to the under 18 program. Having done his apprenticeship in our 16 boys group, he felt it was time to challenge himself and further his basketball credentials. Jordan presented very well to our coordinators and showed he has the drive to succeed with our Under 18 athletes. He is definitely a coach on the rise.

Girls Coaching Positions

Under 12.1 Girls - Stephen Fagan

Steve is a former VC championship winning and State representative player and will head up our U12 girls program this year; coaching the 12 1 girls. He comes to the girls program after his most recent stint in the boys program with the 16 1’s. Steve has had a stellar coaching career to date, coaching across a broad spectrum of juniors, State teams and SEABL.

Under 14.1 Girls - Kerryn Mitchell

Kerryn is a former Blues VC Championship player, WNBL Captain, State and National junior representative. She will continue her role this coming season as the U14 1’s Head Coach; she has also taken on the role of U12’s and U14’s Girls Coordinator. Kerryn has recently returned from coaching the highly successful AAU Women’s tour in Dallas. She was also an AC with the Victorian State U18 girl’s team who came 3rd at the National Championships in 2017. It’s great to have her back at the helm of the 14 1’s.

Under 14.2 Girls - Adam Kerr

Adam is the former President of the biggest domestic club at Frankston Basketball, the Woodlands Warriors. His most recent head coaching role was with the 12 1 boys where against the odds, he coached them into VC Championship. Adam was instrumental in the early years of many of our current 12 1 girls; making him familiar with this age group. We’re very pleased to welcome him over to the girls program to head coach the 14 2’s.

Under 16.1 Girls - Julie Ofsofski

Julie is an Olympian as well as a former Frankston Blues and SEABL great. She moves up to the 16’s after a highly successful year with the 12 2 girls; where she narrowly missed taking them all the way to VC Reserve. Known for her high expectations, we are very fortunate to have Julie leading our U16’s age group as the 16 1’s head coach.

Under 18.1 Girls - Brooke Ary

Brooke is a former, four year College player at Baylor University. Since then she has spent many years coaching in the U18 girls program at McKinnon, as well as being an AC in the Senior Women’s program to highly respected Head Coach and former Big V/SEABL Captain Bianca White. Luckily for us Brooke is now a local and is the President of St Anne’s domestic club. She will be a fabulous mentor and leader for our U18 girls, as the 18 1 girls head coach.
