Secondary College Program

The Frankston Basketball Association currently serves as the leading basketball partner for both Mt Erin Secondary College and McClelland College as part of its Regional Academy.

Mt Erin are into their third year under the tutelage of Frankston Basketball’s High Performance Manager Steve Blackley. The basketball program is delivered as part of Mt Erin’s Sports Academy program which runs weekly throughout all four (4) terms and has been very successful in producing high level players.

The Mt Erin program consists of students being bussed to Frankston basketball stadium in two different shifts. The first 90 minutes are for students from year 7-9 and then after lunch the year 10-12 students commute to Frankston stadium for their session.

The McClelland College Basketball Academy run on a fortnightly rotation and come to Frankston stadium for 1 x 4 hour session with over 70 students from year 7-12 attending. All six (6) courts at Frankston Basketball stadium are required to manage the size of this group with pressure now being to manage the future growth of this program.

As part of the Academy program, both schools run through various drills emphasising skill development and also have the opportunity to use Frankston Basketball’s wellness centre and its state of the art shooting machine which is always a highlight for the students. Most sessions usually finish with live games between the students where they can put into action the skills they had been working on earlier in the training session.

Steve is usually assisted by Frankston Basketball’s two American import players to run these sessions who are act as player mentors to players by passing on their vast experience as professional players to the male and female students. By engaging with these athletes the students can learn not only what it takes to become a professional athlete on the court but also what it takes to be successful off the court.

Students are not only taught how to play the great game of basketball, but to also how to umpire and explore other aspects of coaching; injury management; and administration. The program focuses on skill development while developing a passion in sport to fast track youth into a career in sport as an athlete, coach or administrator.
